SAVING EROL
January 31, 2011

It is with immense sadness that I have to post this
update today.
Erol was peacefully laid to rest today
and buried near his favorite spot
in Jean's yard.

Erol survived what we can only imagine
was a hellish life of neglect, abuse
and abandonment
but it was the advanced stage of
heartworm disease that took his life.
He lost his appetite a few days ago
and his breathing became labored.
Jean took him to the vet and they discovered
fluid around his heart.
Today he saw the cardiologist
who told us that the right side of his heart
was not pumping at all.
The heartworm disease had done
too much damage and there was
nothing we could do to help him.

Jean and her family gave Erol
the very best days of his life.
We can take solace in knowing that he
had love and kindness over the last month
he has been with Jean.
My heart goes out to Jean and her family
as I know they became very attached to Erol.
Thank you so much for all
of the love and care you gave him.

A huge thank you to all of you that
have been following Erol's journey.
Thank you for all of the support and prayers,
thank you for all of the food, beds
and gift cards you sent to Erol.

I know I speak for the rest of NASRN
when I say we are all heartbroken
and mourn Erol's passing.
Please keep Jean and her family in
your thoughts and prayers.

Rest in peace Erol

SAVING EROL
UPDATE: JANUARY 26, 2011

Erol continues to recover from his bout of
Coonhound Paralysis.
He is able to get up and walk on his own now.
He's a little wobbly going down the stairs as
his back end is still weak.
He can walk on his own, though,
and goes up the stairs unassisted as well.
He feels more comfortable being outside when its dark
so last night he took a tour
of the front yard after the sun went down.

He still spends most of his time sleeping
and his cough is more frequent,
due to the heartworms.
We are hoping to have an appt
for him with a specialist next week
to do an ultrasound on his heart.
This will let us know whether or not
he is strong enough for the
immiticide treatment to kill the heartworms.

FYI:
I post most of Erol's updates on
his facebook page

Please help us spread Erol's story
and help make people aware
of the dog fighting and animal abuse
going on in Laurens County South Carolina.
Erol is safe now but there are hundreds of dogs
just like him who are still suffering
and being abused.

ANNISTON ALABAMA
YOUNG FEMALE ANATOLIAN
NEEDS FOSTER OR ADOPT
ASAP

Whenever you are ready for a great big hug, this great big girl will be happy to comply!
Truly the proverbial 'gentle giant,' this sweet young Anatolian
was very friendly and all about coming over for attention.
She gave us great big kisses and did not mind being hugged.
She had lovely manners, not trying to jump up
(thank goodness!)
 or bowl us over.
She came over when called to and stood quietly.

This darling is badly knocked-kneed in her hind legs
It doesn't impede her at all,
nor making her any less loving or deserving of a great home

"SALTY DOG"
14 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG

This is Salty Dog.
She was 9 yrs old when she came into rescue back in 2005.
Her owners went on vacation and left her in a boarding kennel.....
but they never came back.
Salty spent a whole year at the kennel before she came into rescue.
She had the cards stacked against her for adoption
since she was already a senior dog
and had epilepsy too.

Luckily for Salty, she had a wonderful foster mom, Amy,
who took great care of her and decided to adopt her.
Salty is older and slower but is still loving life
and doing quite well for a 14 year old dog.
Kudos to Amy for all she has done for Salty.
And kudos to Salty for living up to her name
and being a true survivor

SAVING EROL UPDATE

Today Erol was able to pull himself up and stand on his own,
on all 4 legs and sqatted to poo.
He was a bit wobbly and weak but his
super foster mom, Jean, was right by his side to help if he needed her.
After he did his business, he walked up the two steps
to go back inside and walked, on his own, back to his bed.
This is the first time Erol has held his own weight
and walked since December 19th!

Erol's appetite is great and he continues to gain weight.
Jean says he looks very regal when he is sitting up in the yard,
looking around and taking in all the sights and smells.
He is still not comfortable being alone outside
but hopefully, when he is stronger and more mobile,
he will have more confidence.
Jean says he has a strong will to survive.

We are cautiously optimistic and hope Erol
will continue to improve.
Once he is stronger and has recovered from
Coonhound Paralysis,
the next step will be to have an ultra sound on his heart
to determine whether or not he can be treated for heartworms.
He has a long road ahead of him but he is
making progress,
one day at a time.

SAVING EROL
A follow up on Erol's road to recovery.......

Erol was rescued from a SC shelter at the end of Oct.
We are pretty sure he was used as a bait dog for dog fighting.
He is HW positive and had ehrlichia and now, his most recent battle
has been recovering from Coonhound Paralysis.
Erol lost the use of his legs just before Christmas.
He spent a week in the doggy hospital and has since been in the care
of his wonderful foster mom, Jean.

These are some new pics of Erol taken over the last week.
The picture at the top shows Erol laying on his back,
looking like a dog that is starting to enjoy life.

This is Erol talking with Jean, his foster mom

This is Erol keeping a close eye on this suspicious looking character

TODAY
Erol was able to get up in a sitting position all on his own!
and.......

with a little help from his friends,
Erol was able to stand and take a few steps!!

Way to go Erol!!
A huge thanks to Jean and Mark for the
love and kindness they are giving to Erol.
I know its a lot of work to care for a paralyzed dog.
You can see that he is in good hands
and continues to make progress
slowly but surely.

"OSHA"
LYLE WASHINGTON

Osha is a 5 yo spayed pure bred Anatolian Shepherd Dog.
Her owners have had many changes in their lives recently
and feel Osha would do better in a different home.
They no longer have a fenced yard for her and she is not happy
to be inside or on a runner all the time.

Osha is a beautiful girl and is in good health.  She weighs appx 95 lbs.
She gets along with both male and female dogs
but does prefer to be the boss dog.
She is good with small dogs and good with cats also,
however she doesn't like to share her food with the kitties.

Osha is good with children and has been raised with them
all her life.
She is housebroken, walks on lead and knows basic commands.
Osha would be happiest with a family that allows her
to be a valued family member and let her indoors and take her on walks.

A BETTER DAY FOR EROL

Yesterday was a much better day for Erol.
Temp foster mom, Jean, reports his eyes are now brighter
and he is reacting to the sights and sounds around him.
This is a big improvement from the last couple of days
bc he had been so withdrawn.
Here he is enjoying a bone, even though he doesnt
have many teeth to chew it with.
It appears most of his teeth have been filed down
which leads us to believe he may have
been used as a bait dog in dog fighting.

On a brighter note,
he's better than he was a couple of days ago
and definitely has not lost the will to live.
Hang in there Erol,
life really can be good!
